Tenants vote 72% NO to privatisation
Swindon council tenants have rejected transfer of their 10,500 homes to a Housing Association, with 6,073 No votes (72.3%) and 2,329 Yes votes (27.7%).
The ballot result comes as the government is promoting a new wave of transfers of council homes. Tenants are demanding that the debt write-off promised to subsidise privatisation must be available where tenants choose to stay with the council. Rents should be used to maintain, improve and build new council housing - not to pay Government debt.
