Stop privatisation; improve existing and build a new generation of first class council housing
Opposition Summit 22 October against Housing Act
The Housing Act introduced by the last Government, is still stalled, with no progress on introducing regulations necessary to impose key parts of the Act such as 'pay to stay'. And this week the housing minister was widely ridiculed this week for his latest suggestions: see an example here. John Perry of the Chartered Institute of Housing confirmed to a recent tenants' conference that implementation of the Act is riddled with uncertainty.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan's deputy for housing this week said that 'If the letter of the Act is followed...we don't think it works. We are making this case to Government.'
The growing opposition is bolstered by a resolution passed at Labour conference 27 Sept committed to opposing and repealing the Act and instead reinstating mass council house building- see resolution here. Building on this growing opposition, a national Summit against the Housing Act 22 October is drawing wide support from councillors, trade unions and tenant groups. The event from 11am-4.30pm is at Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9BD - programme here. 22 October Axe the Housing Act summit 11am to 4.30pm at Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9BD.
